The short answer
The best children’s books of 2026 so far include It’s My Bird-Day! by Mo Willems, Is It Spring? by Kevin Henkes, The Future Book by Mac Barnett and Shawn Harris, The Outermost Mouse by Lauren Wolk and Navigating Night by Julie Leung. For new readers, try the early graphic novel Squirrel Lock Holmes: The Pet Rock Mystery.
A lot of good books came out this year. This is not a ranking of all of them, and it is not an awards list. It is a short, honest round-up of the best children’s books 2026 has brought so far for ages 4 to 8: new picture books and two new early graphic novels that we think are worth finding, each one checked against its publisher’s own page.
Best children’s books 2026: how we picked
- New in 2026 only. Every book here has a 2026 on-sale date on its publisher’s page. We left out new paperback editions of older books and anything not yet published as of October 12.
- Ages 4 to 8. We used the publisher’s own age range for each book, and included one for younger siblings.
- No award claims. The big children’s book awards for 2026 books are announced in early 2027, so you will not find award claims here. Descriptions follow what the publishers say each book is about.
Most of these come from a few large publishers, because their catalog pages list on-sale dates and age ranges clearly enough for us to check. That is a limit of this list, not a judgment on everyone else’s books. We may add more titles as we verify them.
Best picture books of 2026 for ages 4 to 6
It’s My Bird-Day!, by Mo Willems
On sale March 31, 2026. Ages 4 to 6. The Pigeon is back, and it is his bird-day. He has the hat, he has the hot dog cake and he is ready for presents. But can he handle his big bird-day surprise? Kids who already argue with the Pigeon will be ready to argue again.
Is It Spring?, by Kevin Henkes
On sale February 24, 2026. Ages 4 to 8. A flower in the garden, birds in the sky, buds on the branches: it must be spring. Then an icy wind blows and snowflakes fall from heavy gray clouds. Will it ever be spring? Yes, says the sun. Just be patient. A gentle call-and-response book from the Caldecott Medalist behind Kitten’s First Full Moon, perfect for the in-between days of any season.
Mei Mei the Bunny, by Laufey, illustrated by Lauren O’Hara
On sale April 21, 2026. Ages 3 to 7. Mei Mei is a little bunny with a big dream: to make the world happy with her music. At her first recital, she plays a wrong note in front of everyone. A kind picture book about mistakes and nerves, from the musician Laufey.
The Great Escape, by Deborah Marcero
On sale February 17, 2026. Ages 3 to 7. Evie believes in magic but not in her noisy younger siblings, who follow her everywhere. She escapes into the snow and turns a snowbank into a portal to an upside-down world, and of course her siblings follow her in. A richly illustrated adventure for any big sister or brother who needs a minute alone.
Best new picture books for ages 4 to 8
The Future Book, by Mac Barnett, illustrated by Shawn Harris
On sale March 3, 2026. Ages 4 to 8. Every other book was written in the past. This one, it says, was written in the future, and it offers a glimpse of tomorrow’s unexpected words, strange customs and mind-blowing colors. Funny and playful, and a great one for kids who love a book that talks back.
The Outermost Mouse, by Lauren Wolk, illustrated by Kristen Adam
On sale May 19, 2026. Ages 4 to 8. The Outermost Mouse loves her nest at the tip of the beach on Cape Cod, with jam-jar posies and a clock that tick-tocks her to sleep. Then a storm comes, and she has to protect her home. A brave little heroine and a warm picture book from a Newbery Honor author.
Navigating Night, by Julie Leung, illustrated by Angie Kang
On sale March 10, 2026. Ages 4 to 8. Every night a girl helps her dad deliver food from the family’s restaurant, reading the map and giving directions in Cantonese. She does not love it. Then her father tells her how he came to the United States alone as a teenager. Angie Kang won a 2026 Caldecott Honor for Our Lake; this is a thoughtful one to share with older picture-book readers.
I’m So Happy You’re Here: A Celebration of Library Joy, by Mychal Threets, illustrated by Lorraine Nam
On sale February 3, 2026. Ages 4 to 8. A tour of the library with librarian Mychal Threets: activities, movies, games and so many stories, and the message that the library is a place where every child belongs. A lovely book to read right before a first library card.
For younger siblings
Because of a Shoe, by Julie Fogliano, illustrated by Marla Frazee
On sale February 3, 2026. Ages 2 to 5. It is time to put on shoes and leave the house, and it turns into a full tantrum: screaming, flopping and a shoe thrown across the room. Even then, nothing comes between a mother and her child. Tender, funny and very honest about the hard moments, for the parent as much as the child.

Squirrel Lock Holmes #1: The Pet Rock Mystery, by Ashley Belote
On sale March 3, 2026. Ages 6 to 9. Detective Squirrel Lock Holmes and her sidekick, Mole Watson, take on the case of a missing pet rock at Pet Rock Obedience School. The suspects include the whole class, and even the teacher. Silly, pun-filled and a good first mystery for new readers.
